Tenby
is a place for all and a place for all seasons………………
It's a place for walkers, artists,
lovers, and dreamers. It's the
sort of place memories were made for! Somehow Tenby
has gently resisted change and with just a little imagination
you can be transported back in time, helped by the cobbled
streets and Georgian townhouses with their coloured
facades. There is such a lot to see and do in Tenby
and the surrounding area.
The reformed Cistercian Community privately owns Caldey
Island. On a fine day take a boat trip over to the
island and you'll see Tenby from the sea. This is a
lovely way to spend the day and maybe take a picnic.
On the island there is a Monastery, Old Priory and ancient
Churches with some lovely stained glass windows. The
Post Office and Museum is a real step back in time.
Take a stroll around the Island and head for the lighthouse
for some breathtaking views. The sandy beach on the
island can be seen from Tenby. The island has its own
chocolate factory and perfumes and soaps are also made
on the island, which are for sale in the gift shop.
Refreshments are served at the tea gardens. For sailing
times and to book your trip visit the kiosk at the Harbour.
The picturesque Harbour
at Tenby is a lovely place to relax and have a coffee
and while a way some time. This is really the heart
of Tenby and has a long and interesting history. To
find out more about Tenby's history visit the Museum
and Art Gallery, this is just a short stroll from
the Harbour on Castle Hill. Here you will find the story
of Tenby and its maritime history. There is a permanent
collection of art by Augustus John, Gwen John, Nina
Hamnett, John Piper and many more, also exhibitions
of work by other artists held throughout the year. A
gift shop, refreshments and friendly and helpful staff.
Tenby's Lifeboat
Station is also nearby and you can view the Lifeboat
and find out more about its history and the important
role of the lifeboat at Tenby.
The Tudor
Merchant's House is cared for by the National Trust.
This late 15th century town house has been furnished
to recreate the atmosphere of a family in Tudor times.
Not to be missed is the second-hand bookshop opposite
it is a real Aladdin's cave of books and old postcards.
A great starting point to anywhere around the Pembrokeshire
Coast is to call into the National Park Centre, which
is 150 yards from Bay House. They have
a wealth of information on the coast and also a selection
of maps. There is also a very interesting exhibition
housed here.
Many Castles can be found in the surrounding area, Carew
Castle is a beautiful and haunting, here the last
tournament in Britain was held and there are outdoor
events held throughout the summer.
Pembroke
Castle is a very impressive Castle and very well
preserved. Find out how the Tudors lived. Pembroke Castle
is situated in the town.
Set in a wonderful location is Manorbier
Castle should not be missed. There is a beautiful
ancient Church nearby and a little sheltered beach with
access to the Coastal Path.
Visit Stackpole Quay, owned by the National Trust. The
café here is highly recommended. You can walk from here
to the beautiful Barafundle
Bay.
Pembrokeshire has much more than a beautiful coastline,
there are many beautiful gardens, Colby
Gardens, maintained by the National Trust, has a
very fine walled garden, along with impressive grounds,
tea rooms and a gallery.
Picton
Castle also has wonderful gardens and grounds. It
is a wonderful place for a picnic, with tearooms and
an excellent gallery.
Serious shoppers could head for Narberth
for unique designer shops and mouth-watering delicatessens,
set in a traditional market town. Further a field take
a trip to St
David's, Britain's smallest city. St
David's Cathedral should not be missed and also
enjoy the wonderful rugged coastline in this area. The
breathtaking Preseli Mountains are where the bluestones
of Stonehenge are reputed to have hailed and are full
of history and legend.
There is so much more to the
area and I have mentioned just a small selection. Why
not pay us a visit and discover more for yourself!
